2000 World Titles

The provincial waveski associations in South Africa are running local trial series and Open Trials in preparation for the National trials for the International Tag Team event to be held during the 2000 World Series to be held in South Africa during June and July.

The annual Western Province Open Championships, this year sponsored by WP's sponsor FISHMONGER of Claremont and BIRKENHEAD PREMIUM LAGER of Stanford, took place at Cemetery Beach on the False Bay coast.

Day 1 - 1st April 2000
The Western Province Open Championships started today during the first windless day for almost two weeks of strong south-easterly winds. Malan Calitz doing a re-entry in the shore break A light southerly wind was present for most of the day, but this did not affect the small waves which improved during the day. By late afternoon the waves dropped off and competitors were hardpressed to scratch together the 3 waves required. An entry of 28 riders included representatives from Eastern Province and Kwazulu-Natal. The contest continued on Sunday.......

Day 2 - 2nd April

The south-easterly conditions finally departed from the scene to be replaced by light north-westerly winds, ruining any Malan Calitz during the final of the WP Open 2000 chance of moving to the Atlantic coastline where swell remained very small.  The NW'ly winds are directly offshore at Cemetery though and with a small 2-3 foot swell and the light offshore, competitors were once again able to show their style.  The high tide, which occurred about the time of the finals, saw the top contestants desperately braving radicalPierre Slabber during the finals of the WP Open moves in the shore dump to earn maximum points  (no boards were injured during the running of the final......).

Dave Kennett, WP Chairman, representing the sponsors, FISHMONGERS of Claremont, presented the top riders with cash prizes.  Division winners were presented with gift vouchers and gift packs of BIRKENHEAD PREMIUM LAGER.  A lucky-draw of gift-vouchers spot-prizes were drawn.
