Western Province Open Championships/National Trial

1997

The Ocean Action False Bay Western Province Open Championship and National Trial started on Saturday 20th and ended Sunday 21st.

An enthusiastic entry, including contingents from East London, Port Elizabeth and Swakopmund (Namibia) competed in a double elimination knock-out format with a winners and losers flow. Conditions on Saturday were good with clean 1m waves. By Sunday however, the Cape Doctor, a south-easterly gale-force wind, turned the event into a survival of the fittest meleè. Despite the really lousy conditions, some good moves were performed, spirits were high and the contest was enjoyed by everyone.

This contest concludes the 1997 contest calendar. The next major events will be the Splash Festival (Easter time in Port Elizabeth) which the EP committee hopes SAWSA (SA Waveski Association) will sanction as the SA Open and the Southern African Closed Championships which will be staged in Swakopmund Nambia from 8th to 12th July.
